It’s been a while since I’ve looked at domains, in the past especially when I bought my first domains it was fun and you could fairly easily find at least an iteration of what you were after. Lately I’ve proven to myself once again that I am actually capable of applying myself to this niche site/affiliate marketing stuff and I’m taking a real serious approach, the most frustrating part is no longer finding the niches, that remains relatively easy now the hard part is finding appropriate domains.

Last year I found what I thought was a great domain in awaylife.com, nice, short and ripe for developing as an expat resource site I thought, I sat on it for two days and when I went to buy… yep, gone. hugedomains.com had snapped it up and were now trying to sell it for $2.8k (Now $2.6k, it was just renewed so seems the price drops for each year no one buys it). Pissed! Since then I hadn’t really looked at domains.

With my recent foray into niches something I’m interested in doing is an Action Camera site, the likes of GoPro and Contour helmet mounted point of view cameras. But can I find a domain that doesn’t sound like complete gibberish? I haven’t come close. In this case the niche doesn’t help, there are a number of names these cameras are know by which might help for keyword variety but it doesn’t for a keyword targeted domain. Nor do site like hugedomains running around registering every damn two word combination that doesn’t make no sense at all and slapping prices of hundreds if not thousands of dollars on them. I’m sure hugedomains is making huge money but they are doing it at the expense of the internet. Huh? What I mean is that most of the sites on the net are not companies with budgets for acquiring domains they might use, sure many of us are guilty of letting domains languish undeveloped or ignored, but then that is to be expected somewhat. What is completely stupid is snapping up 100s of thousands of domains and pricing them regardless of their quality well beyond the reach of the average domain buyer, where they remain, for years, undeveloped.

If you are a domain buyer I’m sure you’ve thought of a domain, maybe something you are interested in and just hammered the address into your browser, fully expecting it would already be taken. And you’re right it is taken, but it’s not filled with useful information about the topic, it is another fucking parked domain. It pisses me off, so many domains with great potential sit there useless and worthless, much like the guys who register them.

Lets considers the basic economics, supply and demand.

Supply is easy, it’s 1. Short supply increases prices but just because there is only 1 of every domain doesn’t mean there aren’t alternatives, we have the .net’s and .org’s and others, plus we have different words that hold the same meaning.

Demand can certainly vary wildly, sex.com is the obvious example selling at of $10 Million the last few times it has changed hands. But in the world of domains the 80/20 rule is likely more of a 98/2 rule or even higher. Of course I can only guess at what the market for a given domain is at any given time is but my guess is going to be that over the course of a year for the vast majority of domain purchases, the number is somewhere between 0 and 2 potential buyers.

Lets think like an actual businessman and not a brainless domain speculator. A business will want to make a 50% gross profit off the registration and reselling of a domain, they don’t want to hold the merchandise for too long so lets say they buy domains they believe they can sell in the next 5 years at $10 a year to register it they need to set the price at $100 to make their desired profit (ignoring overheads, which lets face it, is pretty small in the domains game). Hang on, doesn’t that mean if he can sell it in 1 year he’ll only sell it for $20 to make his profit? Of course neither of us are that stupid, if he can sell it in a year then demand is higher, if he sells it still for only $100 his gross profit is 90%, not to be sneezed at. These are simple maths and I think it is worth pointing out that the 90% profit means a 900% markup on wholesale price and yep that means a $1000 (a moderate price at best) domain sold within the year has copped a 10,000% markup. Are we even talking about a fair price anymore? Maybe $1000 for an average domain has left the realms of what might be fair pricing and moved into the realm of is this even ethical? I mean I doubt they guys are coming up with 100,000+ domain databases by themselves, he has likely just purchased bit of software to scan unregistered 2 word domains by readability. The “work” he puts in is minimal as is the value of the service he is providing.

On top of this many of the domains I’ve been seeing lately don’t have great money making potential, they would more likely be a labour of love for the owner. The bulk of sales for most lower level sites (the sites with the types of domains I’m talking about) go for about 1 years worth of the site’s annual income, can we really expect similar numbers for an undeveloped domain? The analogy I’m thinking of is a real estate agent trying to sell an acre of undeveloped land for $5 Million because the buyer might build a $5 million house on it.

Supply and demand? I don’t think so. What’s worse, with each item being unique, competition isn’t even a factor and maybe it’s right there where domain economics is broken.

Oh and by the way, I did check if stupiddomains.com is available, it’s not, and it redirects to a domain registrar.

Not so long ago I made a status update on Facebook that caused a bit of a stir, I admit I could have chosen my words better, in fact I should have as what I said didn’t describe my true feelings.

The update was a reaction to others spurring the Australian and Queensland governments for donating a measly $1 million AUD to the people of Queensland while recently making larger donations to foreign countries.

I realised that like my update the ones from others were equally half cocked, $1 million was never going to be the first and last response by either government, crying foul over it was completely pointless. The government will provide relief that will allow Queenslanders to rebuild the lives they had, people will struggle but it is unlikely we’ll be seeing people dieing of starvation or disease in the aftermath.

Another complaint was that insurers would claim an “act of god” or use differences in the wording of policies such as “storm event” instead of “flooding” to avoid making payouts. However it is unlikely this will happen and if it does it will be investigated officially with potential for class actions. Compare that to places where insurance is a. not available, b. not affordable or c. not likely to cover you even if you have it.

Some compared it to the Asian tsunami and while the area affected is huge, I’m not sure it is as big as the tsunami even if it is the loss of life and number of people directly effected is in comparison minuscule. The economic impact is huge, no question, the human cost while tragic is not our and our priorities lie with humans not money.

I can’t help but feel that differences in reporting on the floods in Australia and what I saw while I was in Cambodia was mostly motivated to sell newspapers, the images of devastation are the same, what is different between the reporting in Oz and abroad is the emotion, and emotive headlines sell newspapers. I’d also be lying if I didn’t admit to being a bit miffed that the recent flooding in Thailand and Cambodia was completely unreported in Australian media unless you went looking for it, even then it barely garnered a paragraph.

Finally there were the cries that these are “our own people” and here I will try to avoid stirring any further emotions other than to ask why? Family and friends who might be affected are one thing but the only connection we have to the others are that for the most part we are white, we speak English and we live in the same country, to me that isn’t enough of a connection to make me want to help them more than someone where the local government isn’t capable of providing a quick response and assistance or where the locals don’t have access to, can’t afford or will likely be left to fend for themselves by insurers and international NGOs are probably going to be the first assistance they see.

Last years fires and these floods as bad as they are just don’t compare to events such as the Tsunami, Hati and Pakistan where 10′s to 100′s of thousands died and millions were directly effected. Yet in monetary terms local disasters DO receive MORE in relief than what is publicly donated to disasters abroad. It is only logical that more disasters will happen around the world each year than will happen in Australia so of course more money will go overseas in the course of year than there will go to individual local disasters, don’t worry we CAN afford it.

I look for value in everything, even in charity so if I’m going to send say $100 I look at what it can do. In Oz that might help one Queenslander for a day, if it goes to Brazil it’s going to make a much bigger difference and could help out a whole family.

Lets not skirt the issue, there’s a bit of racism going on here, at the very least Australia has a bad case of xenophobia.

Paupa New Guinea and Indonesia have both donated to Queensland, not a lot and why should they? I’m pretty sure there are far more Indonesians in need of that money than flood affected Queenslanders. I’d rather be homeless in Australia than living in poverty in Indonesia. I’ve just read about a small Indonesian village that managed to raise $58 for the Victorian bushfires.

Get real people, do you think Australia should cease all international aid? Do you think we give too much? The UN doesn’t think so, we don’t even meet the 0.7% of GDP the UN recommends. Should we just let 3rd world countries languish without assistance and development? Get out of the house, see how people with little prospect to improve their standard of living live and come back and tell me we should stop donating to them.

There are always going to be complaints about how this disaster has been handled but in all honesty the response has been pretty good and while some will complain at least their voices will be heard.

There is no simple answer to foreign aid, but anyone saying it should be stopped is an ignorant fucktard and is rich saying I lack compassion.

People and the economy are slowly, very slowly waking up to the fact that we don’t just live in Australia anymore, we are part of the world where borders are in terms other than geo-political are becoming very blurred, the result of only being concerned with our own backyard will result in turning into a country calling out for the Aid we currently give.

I got one, maybe a bad idea but it’s there now and I had a few thoughts on some of the games I’ve been playing.

Uncharted: Drakes Fortune

Is a pretty good game but once the mutants arrived my heart sank. To be honest mutants and zombies (apparently there is a difference) scare the crap out of me, I mostly avoid games where they are a big feature. Other than that though they felt really out of place, it felt as if they were included just to appease the “all video games must have zombies” crowd.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Zelda: The Ocarina of Time was the best game I ever played for a damn long time, until this. Uncharted 2 is just awesome, the graphics, gameplay and story are top class, what more games should aspire too, witty humor also. There are mutants here too but I found them far less scary and not so out of place.

There’s a guy above you! There’s a guy above you!……. There’s a guy below you! There’s a guy below you!

Flynn to Drake as he throws the guy over a cliff. – Uncharted 2

GTA IV

This game is really annoying, Liberty City looks amazing, the radio stations and music are great, then, cut scenes are boring and too long, there is a huge lack of save/checkpoints, the character graphics are shithouse, it’s full of stupid little games and tasks that while well done are completely pointless and add nothing to the game, Roman calling me every five minutes to go on a date with him if fucking annoying, am I playing GTA or The Sims?

Heavy Rain

This isn’t really a game, it’s an interactive movie. The story came together really well in the end but I still feel a little bit confused about if it is the type of thing I’d play regularly. If another like game comes up and perks my interest I’ll do what I do with movies, rent it.

When I started this blog I was on a high, finally earning some decent affiliate income. It grew quickly and in the last two months started to look shakey, next month I expect it will have bottomed out.

The problem was partly my own and partly the affiliate’s.

I had most of my income coming from one source which is never a good idea, spread your eggs and diversify.

The program was always going to end, the fact is the product had already been sold for the most part, I just negotiated my offer with the affiliate and it got me a small cut of the sales. My ability to send them genuine referrals with this method was limited and they were always going to realise that at some point.

Oddly enough though that was not what killed the program, it was the affiliate undercutting their own partners. If there is an unwritten etiquette of affiliate programs they surely broke it. Even if I send them genuine referrals now there is a good chance the customer will search for and find their offer undercutting me,which means they actually steal back the commission I would otherwise have been paid. They are completely within their rights to do what they have done but it is really really poor form for a company that otherwise seems to do a good job of building community and managing the social media side.

All they have really done is piss off their partners and their program still has the same flaw.

Further, I’ve not received a single payment from them, I don’t expect they will try to avoid paying me as they are well known and respected company but the total owing is quite considerable and I have been waiting months now for payment. Regardless April was a record month thanks to some link sales, May is nowhere near April but still enough to keep me confident.

So I’m back to the drawing board and will start developing some new sites, I’ve got to get this moving if it is to become my main income source.

These are the most important lessons in IM I’ve had to learn the hard way, by making the mistakes myself and learning from them. You can save yourself from making the first two mistakes but the last 3 are something I think everyone has to realize for themselves.

Re-purposing

Never Ever get rid of anything you publish online, ever. If you decide to shut down a site, fine but take everything you’ve put on it and store it somewhere else, you’ve spent precious time or money on that content, do not throw it away. You may not be able to re-purpose everything but you will come across something eventually and if you’ve let the content go you will really regret it. Even crappy old articles you have no idea what to do with can be used to chuck a link in and submit to an article directory.

Back Up!

You’ll make a stupid mistake or just get unlucky eventually. I accidentally deleted a database for a site that was growing rather quickly, everything was gone. We managed to get some of the content back from Google’s cache but we lost most of it, it took the wind out the project and we ended up letting it go. Back up your sites and everything on your own PC as well. Sadly most of us learn this lesson the hard way.

SEO

When it comes to making money and you’ve chosen an affiliate program/product, after creating the content for your site to help sell it the most important thing you can do is SEO. Your SEO ability is the deciding factor in if you will be successful as an internet marketer, the value of a number one position can’t be underestimated. SEO will promote your website and promotion will improve your SEO, build links. It is boring for most, including me but it works. You should understand what is important in SEO, I think this article does the best job at illustrating that, however if you target long tail keywords the on site stuff can have a bigger effect on your rankings.

The Hump

If you are not one of those lucky few who throw up a site and are off like a rocket when you earn your first Adsense dollar you will like most Internet marketers spend at least a few months, possibly even a year or more struggling and wondering if it is even worth it. If you keep persisting, keep learning and most importantly keep practicing what you learn eventually it will begin to pay off. The hump is the tipping point, you struggle up the hill and eventually you start seeing the gains and income that indicated this is going to work. You’ve reached the hump, making money just becomes a process, it’s no longer such a struggle, the anguish about reaching your goals disappears, now you know what works and what you have to do.

It Takes Money

Yes you can do it for nothing, the question is how long do you want it to take to reach the hump described above. If you join a program that has a formula to follow and at least a support forum. I joined The Keyword Academy and retrospectively it is at that point that things started to move for me. Another I would consider is Wealthy Affiliate. Programs like these have a proven formula and include some of the tools you will need.

Other tools like UAW for article marketing are usually recommended, I don’t have a UAW subscription, for the number of submissions I do the cost is not worth it. Don’t feel like you have to subscribe to these tools, there is a market out there for people like me and you, many people let you send them your submission and they will submit it using their account for a small fee. When this becomes more expensive than the subscription cost sign up and start doing it yourself.

A world of warning, ebook programs suck, I lost count of how many I went through. Real programs offer support in one form or another, IM ebooks are just other IMs trying to make a quick and easy buck off newbies. If it’s free, take it and learn what you can, if you want to buy an ebook that is fine, you’ll probably learn from it, but don’t expect it to fully equip you.

So there are the 5 hardest lessons I’ve learned in IM but it is not all, there is at least one more major thing you need to to learn… next post, Self Responsibility.

I’m looking at updating one or two of my WordPress themes, particularly the one on Voyagner, the problem these days is that there are so many top quality themes out there it is hard to choose. I remember when I first started using WordPress I would search for hours going through the thousands of free themes available for something I like and that had clean enough coding that I could figure out how to make any changes I needed. These days I can reasonably quickly cut it down to less than 10 premium themes but from there choosing is rather difficult.

Anyway what I wanted to do here was share what I think are some of the best themes and theme makers out there.

Top contenders for the new Voyagner theme are… WP-Genius, WP-MediaMag and Monograph

It is probably in that order too, Genius is slick, I’m liking it more and more and it has great potential. MediaMag has some cool features, I like how it can be used for video, but I’m not so sure about the overall look. Monograph is a cool look but I think it just has too much whitespace for me and will require too much work to get it to do what I want. I’d love to hear what you guys think of these themes, leave a comment with your thoughts.

These days I rarely even consider free themes, there are some great ones out there, premium quality even, if you don’t have the money for a paid theme you can still have a professional looking blog, it will just take a little more searching.

Templatic has an excellent range of themes, if you do any sort of marketing online or build WordPress sites for clients there are a bunch of themes there that are excellently designed with certain types of sites in mind. I have my eye on a few for sites that need an overhaul, this is the first place I check out when looking for premium themes, love ‘em. WPZoom and Solostream is where my shortlisted themes are from also have a bunch of other high quality themes that are definitely worth a look.

Off course I have to also mention the big boys at WooThemes; the current theme on Voyagner is one of theirs and they have some really great work, Gazette being one of my favourites but I was disappointed when I discovered hidden code in their themes. I’ll continue to use their themes if they suit my needs but they aren’t my first choice. I was inspired to use the current theme after seeing the beautifuly modified version on Income Diary, but now I’m looking for something that will suit the changes coming my blog’s way.

I stumbled across NewWPThemes.com which has very good collection of slick looking free themes that I think are perfect for giving niche sites like those I am currently building a much better look. They might not be quite as SEO friendly as far as coding goes but I think the visual improvement is worth it. Many of them are just rehashes of the same theme but I’m giving them a thumbs up. Also check out IsoTherm for a unique and very customisable free magazine theme, this was another one I considered, check out this review.

To get your hands on some premium themes on the cheap you can’t go past ElegantThemes, for $20 you get access to all the themes for a year including new releases. The eNews theme was an early candidate for the new Voyagner theme but just has more whitespace than I am looking for in this case.

The final option is a custom theme, it is becoming more appealing to me but I need to grow my site/s considerably to really make it worthwhile. The theme that gives the nearest functionality and is probably easiest to be modified into a completely custom theme is Thesis, you can even get themes for this theme, they seem to call them skins though, it’s a bit weird but there are some really good ones availible.

I think I’ve pretty much decided on WP-Genius but I will let it stew for a little while, it is a theme that is well suited to my future plans for Voyagner. If you are looking for a new theme or thinking of starting a blog then these sources are highly recommended so get searching

(That’s a Borat reference, not some weird arsed SEO tactic)

Well it’s about time for an update, I’m going to focus on what I’ve been learning mostly.

I made my first submission to UAW (Unique Article Wizard), it has so far taken the page form the end of page 3 to midway up page 2 in the SERPS for the main target keyword, keyword cousins are now around the same. I need to give it more time to really see how effective it will be, but my first thoughts come in a formula: link qaulity/number of links/cost of UAW=little value. That meaning mostly that I think the link quality is too low to be worth subscribing to UAW ($67mth), for this submission I just paid someone else $4 to use their account. Really though I should reserve judgement until Google finished doing its thing and the rankings settle. On the plus side it has resulted in a couple of sales, although they don’t amount to much.

I’ve been using article rewriting software to to help me out further. I think me tactic with this to start with will be to write an article for Ezine, rewrite it using the software and take 10-15 rewrites from that to submit to other article directories that give quality backlinks. It is also becoming evident that I’m going to have to work more on blogroll links and similar exchanges. I hate this method but they are good links and that is the most important thing. I’m also finding certain directories or groups run by the search engines like Yahoo groups are good places to get links.

I’ve started 3 new niche sites, testing out hubpages and done a bit of spying. Let me tell you, unless you are really hardcore about hiding your sites it isn’t difficult for someone to uncover them if they want to, pseudonyms and private registrations or not.

I’ve also found a solid place for outsourcing content creation which I’ll be calling on more and more regularly, this will allow me to focus on finding more niches, getting a site up quickly and creating a bunch of properties

In other news I’ve just found out today that my application on a new apartment was successful, this means it will be a busy two weeks for me as I have to move in ASAP before I leave for 3 weeks traveling in Cambodia and Thailand starting on the 18th. The move is finacially motivated, this smaller/cheaper apartment will really help me out but there will be an inital loss in breaking my lease.

I decided to start this blog to follow my internet marketing journey, it’s somewhere to clear through the bullshit that you find on so many internet marketing blogs, make myself accountable with earnings and progress reports and share advice on internet marketing with those who share similar goals and motivations.

About Me

I’m 25 and from Australia, last year I took a 3 month sabbatical from my job to travel in Southeast Asia. The day I returned I bought and started reading a book I spotted in the airport the day I left, yes it was the famous 4 Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris. I’d just had the best experience of my life and I come home and read a book telling me I can live that lifestyle full time. It was a recipe that completely changed how I wanted to live my life.

I don’t remember how but I guess while doing some research I came across some sites like Digital Nomads and NuNomad. I knew this would be my future.

My Sites

I’ve been blogging off and on for a few years now. My main site is Voyagner.com, it’s my travel and lifestyle design blog. For now I’m keeping my other sites to myself but it’s no huge secret, they are generally travel related. I’ll likely reveal some later, if you really want to know, well, there are ways.

My Goals

To be earning $1000 a month by the end of September 2010.

Move to somewhere in Southeast Asia to start with, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia and Philippines are top of the list.

Utilize systems and outsourcing to ensure this requires as little time to maintain as possible.

The ultimate goal is freedom, to travel and live abroad and to get involved in something bigger than just making money and sipping cocktails on the beach, not that I won’t be doing plenty of that too.

My Plan

I’m working on 10 initial sites, some extremely niche, some that can start small but have room for a lot of expansion. Generally initial monetization will be with Adsense but Links and Affiliates will be used in some instances as well. The basics of IM are, well, very basic. To start with…

10 Sites with 5 keyword targeted posts on each.

5 Articles with backlinks submitted to article directories.

1 UAW submission for each site.

I’m a member of TKA and these tasks are the basics of building sites using the method laid out there, once that is done we’ll look at how they perform and do some more advanced monetization and development.

That’s it for now, there will be no posting schedule on this blog, maybe I will start one later on. For now I just hope that those people who know my goals will follow and those who are interested in this concept will as well.
